Homework Policy

Distribution

Each homework will be distributed as hw00.zip, which contains:

• hw00-assign.Rmd, the file used to create the homework document. May be used as a template for your assignment.
• hw00-assign.html, the homework rendered as an html file.
• hw00-assign.pdf, the homework rendered as a pdf file.
• Additional files such as external data.

00 will be replaced by the current two-digit homework number.

Submission

Homework must be submitted online via Compass 2g. You must submit a single file, hw00_netID.zip, which contains:

• hw00-netID.Rmd
• hw00-netID.html or hw00-netID.pdf
• Any files needed to create hw00-netID.html or hw00-netID.pdf from hw00_netID.Rmd

Here netID is your NetID and 00 is the current two-digit homework number.

For example, on Homework 7, your instructor, who has a NetID of dalpiaz2, would submit hw07-dalpiaz2.zip which contains:

• hw07-dalpiaz2.Rmd
• hw07-dalpiaz2.html
• Any files needed to create hw07-dalpiaz2.html from hw07-dalpiaz2.Rmd

You are granted an unlimited number of submissions. Only your final submission will be graded.

Late Homework

All homework is due at 11:59 PM on the assigned due date.

• Late homework will be accepted up to 48 hours after the initial deadline.
  • Up to 24 hours late, the assignment will incur a 10 percent reduction.
  • Up to 48 hours late, the assignment will incur a 30 percent reduction.
  • No exceptions! Start early and make sure your environment is working correctly and you are able to produce a working document.

If you submit multiple attempts, the final attempt will be graded. If your first submission is on time, but your final submission is late, you will incur the late submission penalty.

Academic Integrity

Students are encouraged to work together and discuss homework assignments. However, sharing, copying, or providing any part of a homework solution or code is an infraction of the University’s rules on academic integrity. Any violation will be punished as severely as possible.

• Any assignment that the course staff believes to be the result of cheating beyond a reasonable doubt will be dealt with as follows:
  • First offense: an undroppable zero on the assignment.
  • Second offense: another undroppable zero on the assignment, as well as an official write-up of an academic integrity violation.
• Note that cheating includes both obtaining others’ work, as well as distributing your own work.
  • You may discuss the assignment with your classmates, but your final answers must be your own. Your final document should be created independently.
  • To avoid any issues, do note copy and paste code. (With an exception for code provided for the course.)
  • Do not share RMarkdown files.

Grading

Each homework will be a variable number of points, however each homework will have equal weight towards your final grade. Grades will be based on both accuracy and presentation of information. In gerenal, you should make your document as easy to read for the TA as possible.

Miscellaneous

• Be sure to read each exercise carefully!
• Include your name and NetID in the final document, not only in your filenames.
• Your .Rmd file must be written such that, when stored in a folder with any data you are asked to import, it will knit properly without modification. If your .zip file is organized properly, this should not be an issue. That is, you should use relative references to external files.
• Your resulting .html or .pdf file will be considered a “report” which is the material that will determine the majority of your grade. Be sure to visibly include all R code and output that is relevant to answering the exercises. (You do not need to include irrelevant code you tried that resulted in error or did not answer the question correctly.)
• Be aware of directions for code randomization for each exercise.
